Part III
Assignement I
P98
I disliked having a fork pointed at me and I disliked the sound of the voice never stopping; I wished he would put food on the fork and put it into his mouth and strangle himself.
The first sentence paints a nice picture of how intolerant Merricat can be in some situations. Immediately afterwards, she also says she would like him to strangle himself. This is not the first time in the story that she suddenly becomes very violent in her thoughts. It makes it clear how immature she is. She looks like an angry child who doesn't get something to her liking. I think it is a good build-up to the plot twist that she killed her entire family and not Constance. Personally, I didn't think it was a plot twist because there were hints earlier in the book that she might be the killer but I think it could still be a plot twist for some readers.
Assignement II
In my view, Constance is the most disturbing character. She seems very 'normal', mature and responsible yet she always goes along with Merricat's stories. The stories Mary Kahterine makes up about the moon, which Constance always goes into and says she would like to be there. The moment they want to run away from the civilians as they surround them after their house burns down, Constance is incapable of making her own decision to run away. It seems odd not to run away immediately in such a situation. She has also made rules about which things Mary Kahterine is allowed to do or touch. Preferably, she does everything herself. She takes charge of the household in an obsessive and scary way. When Mrs Wright and Mrs Clarke visit, she often laughs at the story told by Uncle Julian. As if she likes it the two women are frightened by it. Yet there were lots of moments when she seemed perfectly normal to me and I didn't notice anything strange. Like the times when she took care of Uncle Julian or was busy in the kitchen.
