'How does dyslexia affect the social life of teenagers with dyslexia?'

1) Different forms of dyslexia

  • I am not going to discuss the forms in detail, but I will show that there are those who have difficulties in reading and the others, in turn, have a hard time reading out loud

2) How did these teenagers experience dyslexia during their preschool life?

  • At this age, frustrations arise because children cannot meet the expectations of parents and teachers.
  • They can be socially and physically immature. This results in them having low self-esteem.
  • Some have difficulty interpreting others' body language or social cues. This is an important element for social interaction and will remain an issue in later life. (teenager)
  • Some find it difficult to communicate orally because they cannot get their words out or cannot answer a question immediatly.

-> All these issues result in them having social problems (innate and created by circumstances) and low self-esteem.

3) What are all the 'symptoms' a dyslexic teenager experiences?

  • Problems regulating their emotions
  • Difficulty planning and remembering plans. (innate)
  • They cannot have social interaction for too long (Their social battery drains faster because they have to put much more effort into a coversation than others)
  • They cannot remember a lot of information or instructions at once.
  • (orientation ability is less and if they have to signal to go right or left, they get nervous quickly.)
  • They will adopt a wait-and-see attitude because they don't want to say anything wrong. When reading things, they will not want to do it, but also not tell others why.
  • They struggle to speak as quickly as they think. This sometimes makes it difficult to express their thoughts
  • It can have an impact on their relationship between siblings. The child without dyslexia wants the attention that the child with dyslexia gets, but the child with dyslexia does not want this attention. This causes stress on their relationship.
  • They have lower self-esteem, are more prone to depression and often suffer from anxiety.

4) What can their environment or they themselves do about this?

  • In this, I want to make clear that not everyone with dyslexia has all these problems. There is no medication for it so I want to highlight other solutions.
